You'll definitely need the MotioninJoy drivers to actually do anything with the PS3 Sixaxis/DualShock 3. Fortunately, they're very capable, allowing you to map physical controls to DirectInput axes/buttons as needed, as well as accepting analog input from the buttons and D-Pad if needed.
Seems like every game that's best used with a controller will have a forum post about a logitech controller not working. Anyway, this probably isn't something that can be fixed easily (please prove me wrong), so your best bet for this situation, and to avoid similar situations in the future, would be to pick up an official Microsoft branded or Sony branded gamepad. They also seem to bundle a version of the XInput emulator for games that only properly support X360 pads. As for your X360 pads not working.are they wireless? In that case, all it takes is a proprietary $20 USB adapter.

If you'd like a user flair reflecting that. I fucked around with MiJ a month or two ago when I realized I had a spare ps3 controller that would make a handy pc controller, but ended up coming to the same conclusion: it's a fucking nightmare. But Xinput Wrapper doesn't support xpadder, which is pretty much a deal breaker in my case (I've since dived off the deep end with a full Hyperspin/Hyperlaunch setup, which really works best with xpadder) Gave in and just ordered a 360 wireless dongle, but I'm really looking forward to the xbox One's controller on pc next year, should have great support and work with xpadder out of the box (fingers crossed). That dpad and 20% improvement on response time look like great improvements.
I felt the same way before trying it, but it's a pretty awesome piece of software. At its core, it's a very smart and advanced joystick mapper to keyboard and mouse.
Let's you configure delays/holds to map multiple keys to the same button or stuff like auto fire. Or have an entirely different set of controls while a certain button or trigger is held down. It also has great command line flexibility, and some pretty smart watchdog systems. But as I said, I use it in tandem with hyperlaunch, which will automatically load or unload as many custom profiles for as many controllers as you desire, on a per-game, per-system, or per emulator basis.
Without xpadder, this is far less useful to those like me who depend on it. Still, nice to know there's an alternative to MiJ. I know it's unlikely to be needed by anyone since almost no one uses the original Xbox pads on the computer probably, but since MiJ supports it and as far as I know the linked wrapper doesn't I'll include an alternative for that here.
Download the driver for PC018 Super Joy Box 9 PC019 Super Joy Box 10 PC020 Super Joy Box 11 from set the compatibility mode to Vista SP2 (no idea if that's actually needed, the guide I used said to and it worked for me. I should likely try it on a different computer to see if that part is necessary) and install. For emulation that should be enough since you can usually set the keys in the emulator, but x360ce can be used for any games that only work with 360 or derived controllers EDIT Tried it, compatibility mode thing was indeed not needed on the box I tried. I forgot about the going to controller properties and switching it from digital to analog mode though. I'm not going to disagree that other solutions are easier to setup. I will dispute that they are less versatile if youre not using something married to XInput, which is nice but is no more or less flawed than DirectInput.
Here is my test case. I use a Ferrari HKS PS3 pad to play SimRaceway on the PC. For compatibility with Gran Turismo, it has its analog acceleration and braking mapped to the cross and triangle keys. So it relies on the buttons' pressure sensitivity to work. MotionInJoy lets me map those to slider controls so I can use them on a PC. I don't see any of these other drivers offer this capability, and I can carry that over to MAME too.
